もう試したかたもいらっしゃるかもしれないですが、
http://www.kernel.orgから持ってきた、linux-2.4.20.tar.gzを展開して、
%tar zxvf linux-2.4.20.tar.gz
中略
%cd linux-2.4.20
%patch -p1 < bootsplash-3.0.7-2.4.20-vanilla.diff

を実行したところ、

と出力されて終了しました。
