While I agree with the majority of what you said, this leads to confusion;
multi-part files may have similar semantics to directories, but calling
them such complicates the issue.

I know I keep harping on about this, but it *is* important -- it's
difficult enough getting new users to use the correct terminology for
things without the people who develop the stuff getting it wrong too :)

Other than that nitpick, I thought your message summarised the situation
pretty well :)
