Greetings GRAMPS users,
Just a short note to let you know of a new GRAMPS subproject getting underway.
Currently, we're calling it GRAMPS-tk for lack of a better name. The basic
idea is to create a simplified version of GRAMPS---one that uses much fewer
resources and will be more widely useable. For example, we imagine that this
new version will:
* have a Tkinter interface
* be written in pure Python
* should run on Mac OS X, Windows, and other OS's
* have an ncurses interface (console text)
* run on a standard installation of Linux
* have a simplified programmers interface (for writing reports, or writing
little Python programs that interact with your family tree data)
Although this version will be easier to get going and install, it, of course,
won't have nearly as many of the bell and whistles that the current
gtk/gnome-based GRAMPS has. But other GUI's should be easy to add, too.
This is a long-term project, but we are hoping that later this year to have a
basic version complete. We will try to develop along side the latest version
of regular GRAMPS so as to use all of the new features.

Although we've just begun, we do have a Tkinter interface, it doesn't need
gconf anymore, and can already populate the People screen from the new
database backend. See the screenshot at the url above.
Thanks to Don, Alex, and the entire GRAMPS development team for making this
possible, and for their kind support!
-Doug Blank
