[cola:07574] The way WUW is going ...

Here is the introductory page of the revamped WUW project. Take a look
and see where we are going:

What is WUW

WUW stands for Who Uses What. It was primarily intended to be an auxiliary tool for the so called Helsinki Project, a research sponsored by the Finnish Minister of Development Aid in order to find out Free and Open Source sofware projects that could help emerging economies.

WUW aims to be a database of findings about webservers, in a certain way similar to Netcraft, although built entirely on top of free software and being a free software itself, released under the GNU GPL.

The simplest way to find what WUV is all about is to query the system for a given host, for instance: wuv.codigolivre.org.br. If the host have been categorized and crawed before, you will see a page with results, with the possibility for you to add your comments, anonymously or not. If the host have not yet been crawled, you will see a page with a couple more fields you may wish to fill, and the host you have added will be crawled in no more than 48 hours. Our WUW administrator can act upon the host information, further categorizing it.

WUW also provides statistics on the data it has already gathered. You will be able to see for a specific country or type of host what are the most used web servers, mail servers, etc. You can also use the "advanced research features", where you will be able to add your own type of research. For instance, you want to know which webserver is the most used by a specific group of companies: create a research called "TOP 100 Coal Mining Companies", and add the host addressess. We intend to build "wizards" to help you set up this kind of research.

You may also do a "bulk submit" of hosts if you want to, just follow the instructions regarding the layout of the file you will submitt with your host names. The simplest way is to provide all of your hosts, each one in a separated line:

www.brod.com.br
www.univates.br
www.codigolivre.org.br

and so on.

Please note special regulations may apply depending on where the host you wish to get some information is located. We will comply to all pertinent regulations and will remove data from our database if we find this is recquired by any specific regulation.

You can host your own WUW site if you want to. Click here to download the WUW program and installation instructions. WUW is a work in progress! Make sure you know what you are doing when installing it. Comments, suggestions and bugfixes are welcome. WUW requires PHP, Apache and has only been tested in a Linux server.
