We are pleased to announce that the the Indian Linux Users' Group,
Kolkata Chapter (www.ilug-cal.org) is going in a big way for COMPASS
2003, one of the largest IT shows in Eastern India (to be held from 24th
to 27th January). It has obtained a 18 sq-metre stall (9x2) (stall nos
26, 27, 28) at Sangam Hall in Park Street, one of the largest stalls in
the event. The stall has been sponsored by the parent body of the group,
Linux India.
The group has decided that it will use this oppurtunity as a platform
for the introduction of GNU/Linux and Free/Libre/Open Source Software
(FLOSS) to the people of Kolkata, and to demonstrate and educate that
GNU/Linux and Free/Open Source Software can be a viable alternative to
Microsoft Windows and proprietary software.
Atul Chitnis from Exocore Consulting, Bangalore will be speaking at the
the Software Summit in COMPASS on "Open Source Solutions and
eGovernance" where he will discuss how Open Source Software can be
effectively implemented in eGovernence, along with pratical cases,
requirements and matching solutions. He will be also speaking on "The
Open Source Corporate Desktop", where he will highlight the migration
process, and the comparative advantages.
Moreover, Arvind Yadav from the Goa Linux Users' Group will be talking
on "Case study: Linux adoption by schools in Goa" where he will describe
how the Goa Computers for School Project (GSCP) took Linux to the
schools.
The members of the group will also be giving eighteen one-hour talks (40
pre-registered participants per slot) on getting computers up and
running with GNU/Linux, using home computers (multimedia, entertainment,
games, communication -surfing/chatting/email etc, Productivity Suites -
i.e. Micosoft Office replacements), replacing the office desktop with a
GNU/Linux based alternative, the GNU/Linux based File/Print and
Internet/Intranet Servers, computer/network security, Scientific
Computing with GNU/Linux, miscellaneous hi-end stuff like CAD/CAM tools,
Localization (Bangla GNU/Linux) etc. The full list of talks is available
