JEEPS is a UNIX-based Garmin GPS communication and analysis function
library and development system. It was written under Linux but also
works on other platforms including SGI/Solaris/OSF.
This ALPHA TEST library is written in ANSI C and has both
communication and cartographic components. The LGPL source code plus
an application demonstrating its use is available from:
ftp.hgmp.mrc.ac.uk pub/ajb/jeeps/
ftp://ftp.hgmp.mrc.ac.uk/pub/ajb/jeeps/
Current distribution file: jeeps-0.0.1.tar.gz
Features of JEEPS are:
a) High level host communications routines treating waypoints, almanacs
etc as objects.
b) Retrieval and sending of objects
c) Designed to work with all Garmin GPS models automatically. Detection
of the protocols a GPS supports.
d) Portability: Uses GNU configuration tools. Big and little endian
compliance built-in
e) Datum conversions (over 100 datums and 27 ellipsoids)
f) Cartographic functions
g) A development environment for other applications and an open
source repository for contributed library functions.
The library has all the Garmin Interface Specification link, command,
application protocols and data types coded in a hierarchical form. It
should therefore work with all current (adhering to Garmin Interface
Specification December 16th 1999) Garmin models. It is also easy to
extend should new Garmin GPS devices be produced with different
protocols and data types. Financial constraints prevent me from
purchasing the entire range therefore any reports of failure with
various models will be appreciated (but please give full details
including all the information the utility program shows for protocols
[if you can run the program]). NMEA support will be added.
Cartographic functions and coordinate systems of general use (e.g.
cartesian, Molodensky, Transverse Mercator, UTM etc) and parochial use
(UK OS, Irish Grid etc) are implemented.
Any constructive criticism, bug reports, contributions (library or
applications) etc are welcomed. Contact:
