Press Release
Richard Stallman of the Free Software Foundation Visits Cincinnati
The Cincinnati GNU/Linux Users Group, in conjunction with the University
of Cincinnati, is pleased to host Mr. Richard Stallman of the Free
Software Foundation for a talk on "The GNU/Linux System and The Free
Software Movement". The talk will be at the University of Cincinnati
Engineering Research Building Auditorium, Room 427 at 7:00 p.m. on
January 24th, 2000. This event is open to the public and everyone is welcome.
Mr. Stallman will speak on the goals, motivations, history, and future
plans of the GNU project. GNU is planned as a complete software system
which is *free*: everyone is free to copy it and redistribute it, as well
as to make changes either large or small.
GNU/Linux, which some just call Linux, is a coupling of the GNU system,
started by Mr. Stallman and the Free Software Foundation in 1984, and the
Unix-like kernel component began by Linus Torvalds while he was a graduate
student at the University of Helsinki, Finland. There are estimated to be
over 10 million users of GNU/Linux systems today.
In 1991, Mr. Stallman received the Grace Hopper Award from the Association for
Computing Machinery for his development of the first Emacs editor. In 1990 he
was awarded a MacArthur Foundation fellowship, and in 1996 an honorary doctorate
from the Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. In 1998 he received the
Electronic Frontier Foundation's Pioneer award along with Linus Torvalds.
In 1999 he received the Yuri Rubinski Award.
The Free Software Foundation (FSF) is dedicated to eliminating restrictions
on copying, redistributing, understanding, and modifying computer programs.
They do this by promoting the development and use of free software in all
areas of computing---but most particularly, by helping to develop the GNU
operating system.
The Cincinnati GNU/Linux Users Group, locally known as the Cincinnati Linux
Users Group, is a local organization dedicated to promoting the use of the
GNU/Linux System. Founded in 1996, the group has been instrumental in
supporting local GNU/Linux users in Cincinnati.
The University of Cincinnati is a state-supported, Research I institution
located in southwest Ohio. UC includes a main academic campus often
called "West Campus," a medical campus known as "East Campus," a branch
campus in suburban Blue Ash, and a rural branch campus in Clermont County
just east of Cincinnati.
For more information regarding Richard Stallman's visit, contact Bradley
M. Kuhn at 475-0322 or see the Cincinnati GNU/Linux Users Group web site
