What is Qm?
===========
This is an announcement advertising the availability of `Qm', a free music
program for X11R6. It is built on Qt, with a KDE version on it's way. Qm
is written by me, Andreas Fredriksson, because I felt the unix world
lacked a good tracker program. It is released under the GPL with full
sourcecode. Check out the Qt license for commercial use though.
What state is Qm in?
====================
The program is up to version 0.61 alpha, which means you can try it and
report bugs, but not trust it to be reliable (though it might be fairly
usable). Version numbers will be slowly creeping upwards as bugs are
removed and missing or new features are implemented.
Pre-beta testers are needed, and I'd like comments from people who want to
try it out and report bugs (or even help develop it).
What can Qm do?
===============
Features as of version 0.61:
* 4 to 32 stereo channels
* finetuning, panning and volume
* extended effect columns
* realtime low/high/resonance filters
* sliding (not fully implemented)
* delay line (not fully implemented)
* module loading/saving
* sox alien sample format importing
* wav export
* integrated sample editor (with sampling)
* note sweeping (effect param. interpolation across multiple notes)
* separate shuffle/speed-change column
* sub-note effect interpolation
* overlap buffers for click reduction
In future versions:
* mpeg layer-3 export (yes, this is cool)
* better sample editor functions
* tremolo/vibrator/chorus/distortion effects, possibly others
* possibly quicker mixing routines
* better kde conformance
What can't Qm do?
=================
No midi. Probably I'll never include support for it.
How can I get Qm?
=================
Currently only source code is available, as I think preparing binaries
with all the different compilers and libc-versions out there is a royal
pain.
New snapshots are put up once or twice a week, make sure you run the
latest snapshot when you report bugs. If something dramatic changes, I'll
try to notify all the users I know of. Therefore, send me an email at
dep _at_ canit.se if you download the software.
The program compiles and runs on FreeBSD and Linux, and possibly other
platforms using the OSS sound drivers.
For information about Qm, tracking and screenshots check out my personal
homepage at http://www.canit.se/~dep/.
For source code and some modules check out ftp://ftp.trekab.se/pub/qm, but
please keep the load down, it's a fairly slow link.
Make some music,
