This posting is to announce the availability of LEAP v1.1.9 on various
ftp sites.
LEAP is a free RDBMS (Relational Database Management System) that has
been used as an educational tool in Universities around the world to aid
students as they learn database theory. It allows relational algebra
expressions to be entered directly into the system, and the results to
be queried. It supports relational closure, so complete expressions can
be deeply nested. Examples are included from popular database texts,
including C.J.Date's "An introduction to database systems".
LEAP is entirely free (it is distributed under the terms of the GNU
General Public License), and is very easy to install. All distributions
contain the full 'C' source code. Versions exist for all Unix
implementations, and Windoze 95/3.1/NT. Full documentation is included
in the distribution, and is available on the web. LEAP is in active
development (on a Linux 2.0 slackware system) by the author.
Full details, including links to the main ftp archives, are available on
the LEAP web page:
http://www.dogbert.demon.co.uk/leap.html
http://www.brookes.ac.uk/~e0190404/leap.html
Further feature summary information is included at the base of this
posting.
Main FTP sites are as follows. Note that SunSite's incoming Linux
directory is heavily backlogged, therefore pub/Linux/Incoming can be
used for downloads.
* ftp://ftp.demon.co.uk/pub/compsci/databases/leap/leap-1.1.9.tar.gz
*
ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/apps/database/relational/leap-1.1.9.tar.gz
* ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/Incoming/leap-1.1.9.tar.gz
Web downloads via:
* http://cs3.brookes.ac.uk/~e0190404/leap-1.1.9.tar.gz
* http://dogbert.demon.co.uk/leap-1.1.9.tar.gz
* http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/Incoming/leap-1.1.9.tar.gz
*

Search for ftp sites close to you via the web:
http://ftpsearch.ntnu.no/ftpsearch
Search key should be "leap-1.1.9.tar.gz". Note that Sunsite is very
well mirrored around the world.
LEAP 1.1.9 is known to compile and run on Linux, Solaris, and AIX.
Earlier versions of LEAP compiled and ran on HP-UX, Next, SunOS, AIX,
IRIX, Windoze 95/3.1/NT. Note that an ANSI-C compiler is currently
required. (GCC comes highly recommended).
Strictly speaking LEAP 1.1.9 is BETA software, but extensive testing has
shown no major problems.
For existing users of LEAP v1.0, v1.1.8 includes the following features
new to 1.1/1.2:
* Self contained relations, no seperate files (.tmp, .fld, .rel)
* Seperate Utilities included for conversion/analysing databases.
* Command line editing using GNU readline, gives Emacs, vi like
editor
* delete routine implemented.
* Activity log implemented to record user activity.
* Database to open specified on command line (-b dbname).
* Optimisation step
* Incorrectly specified "create relation" commands clean up if
incorrect data type specified.
* create database operator
* reverse operator implemented - To reverse engineer a database.
* create relation can be nested.
* LEAP completely auto-installs (No database heirarchy in source
distribution any more. A single .src script does it all)
* LEAP can be installed with a small footprint for multiple users on
a single system. Only files that change are stored in the users
home directory.
Regards,
Richard Leyton.
