bibprep is a command-line tool that filters an HTML-like file that contains
special embedded bibliography records in order to generate both bibtex and
true-HTML output. Because non-bibliography characters are not intercepted,
authors can intersperse arbitrary HTML code to annotate and format the
output. The main use of the program is to allow easy maintenance of
annotated bibliographies. Bibliography entries themselves are in an XML-like
format.
The learning curve for this program should be < 10 minutes.
The source and executables are available under a gnu-like license. (The
program comes without support.) Sample input and output is available. (The
example is the beginnings of a bibliography on IPO-related papers.) linux
and windows binaries are also available. For details, see
http://linux.agsm.ucla.edu/ipo/bibprep.html

Hello all,
X version 5.05 of BD4 is now available for Linux, SunOS, Solaris,
IRIX and OSF1 (A PC and Java version also exist). The online level
editor has also been complete allowing you to create and play your
own and other's levels.
For those new to the game, BD4 is a game similar to the original
apple II 'boulderdash' game with a few differences. The game
uses a personal player record with optional email and URL tags. It
also stores a top 100 GLOBAL scores for each of the more than 100
levels and has become very competitive. Both single player and
teamwork modes are available.
The original levels include many game objects (bugs, aliens,
running mines, yam yams, rock, different diamonds types, bombs,
grenades, keys, doors, special walls, nuts, attractor wheels, slime,
etc ) and the new editor and new levels introduce wormholes, baloons,
wizards, mud, switches, cowards, ernies, sources, boondies, expanding
walls, turtles and more...
To date over 320,000 games have been played world wide.
The Linux/UNIX version is completely FREE. Have a look and
spread the word,

paudio, or /proc/audio, is a loadable kernel modules and kernel patch
that allows you to read and save a copy of the data currently being
played by the soundcard. This allows you to save any data being played,
regardless of what software is used to play it, or what format the data
is in.
Some audio streaming software doesn't allow audio data to be saved to
disk, and some use formats whose specifications are not publically
available. This is a way around these problems.
This is more of an exercise in writing kernel code than it is useful
software, and I don't doubt there are better solutions than this one
(like using ptrace, perhaps). Anyone interested in learning about the
/proc filesystem, about writing kernel modules, or understanding some of
the soundcard source code may find this useful.
In fact, one must be fairly competent at understanding digital sound file
formats in order to use paudio effectively, but feel free to send any
questions to me.
There are a few bugs reported in the README, and I would appreciate it if
any experienced kernel hackers would look at these reports and at my
code, and give me advice or feedback.
http://web.syr.edu/~jdimpson/proj/paudio-0.1.tgz
ftp://camelot.syr.edu/pub/linux/paudio-0.1.tgz
paudio requires a recent Linux kernel, and you must have the kernel
source code, as it includes a kernel patch. Furthermore, you must have
root access to load it.
paudio does not work for MIDI sound.

The next workshop is coming January 17th. 1998
Saturday the 17th from 11am till 4pm, the Silicon Valley Linux Users
group (SVLUG) will be meeting to have an installfest and workshop
at UMAX in fremont.
The address is:
UMAX Technologies, Inc.
3561 Gateway Boulevard
Fremont, CA 94538 USA
Directions are pretty easy:
From 101 take 237 East towards 880. Take 880 North to Gateway
Blvd. Gateway Blvd is South of the NUMMI plant, so if you reach
the NUMMI plat you've gone too far. Head west on Gateway Blvd.
UMAX is on the right hand side after about 1/4 mile. Gateway
Blvd ends right after UMAX, so if you reach the end, UMAX is on
your right. If you are looking at umax, our meeting around is
around the right hand corner, you'll see a fenced in patio. That's
us!
Bring your machine and if you are installing a new version of linux,
your installation of linux. Some installations will be there for you
to use though. We will have a 10baseT network hooked up, so bring your
NICs!
If you have any questions, drop me a line.

A Program for the Analysis and Simulation of Nonlinear Electric
Circuits and Dynamic Systems
Abstract
SCEPTRE (System for Circuit Evaluation and Predicition of Transient
Radiation Effects) is a general purpose circuit analysis program, which
provides all three major analyses, AC, DC, and transient analysis, on either
linear or nonlinear networks.
It employs a free-form input language and state variable methods to simulate
problems of interest to electrical engineers.
Other highlights:
- - Flexible nonlinear input. Circuit elements may be described as constants,
tabular data, or abritrary functions of other network quantities.
- - Flexible modeling capability. The arbitrary functional capability allows
any device to be modeled to the degree of accuracy required for an analysis.
- - State-of the art numerical methods. The code simulates networks in a
cost-effective manner. It employs three explicit and one implicit
integration routines.
- - Stored models. In addition to built-in elements, SCEPTRE is capable of
storing circuit models permanently, or temporarily in its own model library.
- - Automatic initial conditions. The initial conditions of circuit variables
are determined in two ways: automatically determined from DC steady-state
solution of a circuit network, or manually from user specified initial
conditions.
- - Rerun. Multiple case rerun based on a single master run may be carried out
automatically. The user supplies only the changes that apply from the
master run for each repeated run.
- - Defined Parameters. A special section has been created to enable
the user to define quantities that may be output other than sources
or passive currents and voltages. The user may enter systems of
first-order differential equations that may or may not have anything
to do with a particular electrical network.
- - Minimization of computational delays. The sequencing of instructions by
SCEPTRE ensures that computational delays in transient analyses will be
few even when complex functional dependencies are present.
- - Variety of run controls. The user may control simulations to a fine degree
rather than "giving" the network to the code and losing control.
- - Subprogram Capability. The user who is familiar with computer
programming may write FORTRAN subroutines and insert them in otherwise
conventional SCEPTRE runs. This option permits handling special situations,
even though these should be rare.
- - Multiple analyis available. Allow the analyst to use one code to run
various analyses on circuit: DC (sensitivity, worst-case, Monte-Carlo,
optimization), AC, transient analyses.
A graphical user interface NGP has been added using GNUPLOT. As the source code
is available, NGP may be modified due to other graphical software.
Requirements (are part of the distribution):
- - Fortran compiler "fort77/f2c"
- - GNUPLOT
- - asa filter for carriage control

Hello,
I have developed a small X11 based address book (card file). It is
similar to many rolodex type programs which are already available. It
has some nice features like the ability to organize the cards into
folders and sub-folders which some of the others lack. The source code
is available from
http://pw1.netcom.com/~asav/
from where one can download it. I have tested this program on Redhat
Linux 4.1 and Slackware. I have also successfully run this program on
few other operating systems. I have not bothered to upload this program
to sunsite or other popular Linux sites thinking that it will be an
useless addition to hundreds of similar program already there. If anyone
thinks otherwise, please send me an email at asav _at_ ix.netcom.com.
The software is free and can be used under the terms and conditions of
the GPL. If you find bugs, send me a mail. I will try to fix it. But
there is no warranty whatsoever.
Thanks.

Hello! I'm pleased to announce the first (and somewhat
shakey) release of KPilot. KPilot is an attempt to write a "Hot-Sync
Manager" for 3Com's Palm Pilot and a KDE desktop. This is only
slightly above a proof of concept release as most features are not
implemented, however it will give me an idea as to whether or not this
whole approach will work.
What it does do:
* Full Backup/Restore of Palm Pilot with a mouse click
* File/Database installation utility with URL support
* Email synchronization (incoming and outgoing) via
POP and sendmail
What it doesn't:
- Allow editing of backed up data.
- Partial backups.
It is based on a stripped down distribution of
pilot-link.0.8.7, and requires the KDE/QT libraries. _Please_ read
the README file in distribution for a brief explanation of use and
warnings. I am very interested in feedback especially if someone
finds it useful (or even working).
You can pick this little gem up at:
http://www.slac.com/pilone/kpilot_home/
For the KDE libraries, see:

For more information, look at
http://linux.med.ohio-state.edu/meetings/classes.html
or
http://linux.med.ohio-state.edu/meetings/
Who is teaching this class?
Mark Nielsen, 292-8955, men2 _at_ auto.med.ohio-state.edu
Where?
Baker Systems
1971 Neil Ave
Columbus, OH 43210
room 120
3:00 to 5:0 p.m.
What is being taught?
In general, the installation of RedHat 5.0, how to use some of its
administration programs, what Linux can do for you, what advances
have happened in Linux, demonstration of Caldera OpenDOS and Webspyder
which is a web browser, and also any questions from the class.
The general guide will be the RedHat manual which is online at
http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/rhl/RHL-5.0-Installation-Guide-HTML/manual
Why?
I am grateful for Linux being there when I needed it. A long time
ago I didn't have the cash to buy commercial programs which only
did half the job. Linux was there for free and it did everything
I wanted it to. So now I am just spreading it around for fun.
What good is Linux and the other stuff?
Well, first of all, Linux has a lot of user-friendly programs
either already developed (like Netscape and StarOffice) or they
are being developed (like KDE and Gnome which are Windows95
like desktops). If you are a programmer, Linux provides many different
programming languages. If you are one the programmers who developed
the movie "Titanic", you are very happy you were able to use
150 Linux computers to develop the graphics for the movie. If you
are a systems administrator, you would be happy to know that
installing and maintaining Linux systems are easy and can
be done remotely. If you are an accountant, you would be happy to
know it is all free or that if your computer person demands a cdrom
it only costs $2. If you are paranoid, you would be happy to know
that Linux can provide very secure networks.
Get on the bandwagon for the future!
About the Titanic movie and Linux, look at

This posting announces the release of a new version of Quikscript.
Quikscript is a PostScript text formatting and typesetting program.
It enables documents to be prepared on any type of hardware, using
visible layout marks to control the appearance of the output, and
produce output on a PostScript printer by despatching Qs and the
document file to the device. No processing is performed by the
host hardware; all processing is done within the printer.
The advantage that Quikscript provides, other than portability,
is precision of control over output. Because it is written in
PostScript, it is interpreted at run-time within the printer.
It is possible to create documents that modify the Quikscript
program during execution. It is very easy to include other
PostScript programs or fragments with Quikscript. It is possible
to use special PostScript fonts, such as hand-generated ones.
Graphics generated from a variety of sources can be easily included,
as can text output from computer programs. It is possible to embed
Quikscript within a document, such as an advertisement or a telephone
bill.
Changes in this release include several bug corrections and a tool to
convert Quikscript documents to HTML.
The Quikscript distribution is available by anonymous ftp from
"ftp.adfa.oz.au" in the directory "pub/postscript". It may also be
accessed through the World Wide Web at URL
http://www.cs.adfa.oz.au/~gfreeman/

I am looking for friendly users to beta test LLNL XDIR 2.1.
LLNL XDIR (which is LLNL XFTP's successor) is a Unix/Motif-based graphical
FTP client that provides a user interface for drag-and-drop file
transfer. XDIR simultaneously displays any number of directories for any
number of hosts, with each directory being displayed in its own window.
XDIR supports powerful directory browsing capability, including iconic and
hierarchical views.
Version 2.1 is largely a maintenance upgrade of version 2.0 with a few new
features (sorry I was unable to implement all the many requested features,
but I don't have a lot of time to devote to working on XDIR).
Improvements provided by Version 2.1 include:
1. Automatic, transparent reconnection when an FTP server times out.
2. Firewall support for proxy servers.
3. Support for passive (PASV) mode data transfers.
4. Support for WFTPD, a shareware FTP daemon for Windows platforms written
by Alun Jones.
5. Improved support for standard Windows NT FTP server.
6. Local, uncompressed files are now viewed in-place (instead of first
being copied to a temporary directory).
7. File transfer dialog now displays data rate instead of number of bytes moved.
8. User control of double-click time interval in directory window.
9. Improved portability.
10. Many bug fixes.
If you would like to test LLNL XDIR 2.1b1, you can obtain the source code from
ftp://ftp-lc.llnl.gov/pub/ia/llnlxdir/source/llnlxdir2_1b1.tar.Z
LLNL XDIR builds and runs on most Unix systems, but requires Motif.
Please email your comments about building and using version 2.1b1 to
llnlxdir _at_ llnl.gov and specify your platform and Motif version (e.g., SGI
running IRIX 6.2 with Motif 1.2.5). I'd like to hear about which
platforms you have success on as well as any problems you might
encounter. Also, please mention whether you are using a proxy server.
Thanks.

Hello,
I wrote a Ghostscript driver for the Brother HL 720 laser printer. I
submitted it to Aladdin Enterprises and it should be included in
upcoming versions of Ghostscript (i.e. the ones coming AFTER 5.10).
This driver is completely free from copyrights by Brother or Microsoft
(the printer is not a true WPS printer, which is why I could obtain
documentation). You should not that such documentation is not available
for Oki and Canon (LBP 660) printers which prevents us from writing
drivers for them (thanks to a Crimosoft Non Disclosure Agreement...)
Some facts about the driver and the printer
= The printer is a 600dpi, 6 ppm , 300$ printer
= With ghostscript you can print at approximately 5 ppm
= It took less than 50 hours to develop the driver
People (especially maintainers of Ghostscript packages for commercial
distributions) who want to use the driver with gs3.33 can contact me and
I will send them my patch. (The patch has already been posted in
fr.comp.os.linux a few months ago). Maybe normal users can wait for
debian and red hat packages.

Sincerely
P.O. Gaillard

Hi!
I'd like to announce the first public version of my MIME mode for
Emacs. It's a project of about 10 000 lines of Emacs lisp that
enhances the rmail mode of Emacs.
The current version is 0.80 and can be found at
http://www.coli.uni-sb.de/~theiling/ht-mime/
Features:
- composition and decomposition of MIME mails of an arbitrary
complexity. The main goal of the decomposition is to make
the mail human readable and to write data to files.
- support for base64 and quoted-printable encoding (of course)
- support of PGP-MIME encryption standard
- Remailer support
- call of helper applications out of Emacs (.mailcap is parsed)
- RFC compliance was an important goal
- menus for easy use
- easily configurable
- transparent composition of MIME mails just before sending
- very good HTML documentation (on- and off-line)
- no hidden advertisements
Although this is still alpha software, it is used without any problems
by me and some friends for some month now and seems to be stable.
Bye,
Henrik

Greetings, it's your favourite moderator talking.
I figured I've been putting this off enough for now. My introduction,
that is. (Why an introduction? Seems appropriate - after all, we'll
have to cope with each other for a while now...)
I'm a CS major, studying - in practice - for the first year in the
University of Helsinki. I first got in the university in the fall of
1996 for my civil service (this was also the official starting point for
my studies). I was lucky enough to get a good position as a part of the
unix administration team in the computing center. Apparently I was good
enough for them, too, since after the civil service was over, they hired
me as a part-time employee. Currently I'm the local newsmaster, though I
tend to drift into doing Linux stuff also.
Anyway, how did I get into this c.o.l.a. mess in the first place? Now
there's a short story: Lars (the previous moderator, remember him?), once
we'd gotten to know each other a bit on IRC, asked me if I'd have any
spare time. Which I didn't, but I told him that I'd think about it. And
the rest, as they say, is history.
Why, then? I first tried Linux sometime when it was in the 0.99plX stage.
After that, I went back to DOS/Windows for a while, driven by the lack of
space on my HD. However, I was already one of the administrators of the
Oulu Lyseo senior seconary school's (in which I was studying at the time)
Unix system, and wanted something similiar at home. I managed to fit Linux
back in again later on, and then it stayed. Gradually, I began to use DOS
less and less, and finally dumped it altogether.
Now I've been using Linux almost exclusively for what, maybe 3 years.
I feel it's time I gave something back to the community that's created
this OS and the software to run on it. However, I don't feel I have quite
the necessary skills nor the time to seriously contribute to the several
development projects. In order to get up and actually do something dispite
of that, I took the job of moderating this group. Hopefully I will be able
to properly contribute also to the development of free software at a later
time. (This is not to say that I think development is above all else, just
that it's something I'm more interested in.)
"What then?" I hear you ask. Time will tell. I don't intend to keep on doing
this forever. For the foreseeable future, though, I'll take care of the job
as best I can. Which probably includes making some more mistakes, but
hopefully they'll be less and less frequent as time goes by.
Any input, excluding flames (but, of course, including constructive
criticism), is always welcome.
Yours,
Mikko Rauhala
PS: Since this is my first chance to beg, I wouldn't mind a trip around
the world, either. Though I'd rather go with my SO than with Lars
(no offense, Lasu ;)

*[Now available in Germany. Shipping January 21st in USA]
The long-awaited upgrade to ADABAS D RDBMS, Version 10.0, is finally
shipping. ADABAS D, one of the most popular SQL database solutions
available on the Linux platform, contains a number of new and useful
features, which are especially compelling for those in need of a
database solution for web-based applications.
New features include:
Powerful Pure Java JDBC Driver
==============================
Allows the integration of applications programmed in Java.
Perl interface
==============
Allows usage of CGI with ADABAS D
Improved WebDB Module, "WebDB II"
=================================
The popular WebDB Module has been improved to allow easier and more
flexible access to your database from your web server. With the WebDB
module Adabas D becomes an RDBMS-based solution for managing WWW
documents on a web server. WebDB offers functions for storage and
database retrieval of web documents that consist of HTML pages and GIF
graphics. In addition it features the generation of dynamic web pages
with embedded SQL commands. For a web server this presents the
advantages of database-based data management which results in security
by backup, recovery and restart. WebDB is compatible with all web
servers that support CGI or the Netscape Programming Interface
Other features & benefits with ADABAS D:
Wide range of client components
===============================
ADABAS D offers end users, application developers, and database
administrators with a wide range of easy-to-use client components. These
components are particularly useful under Windows. Using a powerful ODBC
driver, ADABAS D provides Windows clients with transparent SQL access to
all standard Windows applications and development environments.

KSR[T] Advisory #006
Date: Jan 14, 1998
ID #: lin-dlvr-007
Operating System(s): Linux ( Debian 1.3.1, Slackware 2.x )
Affected Program: deliver
Problem Description: deliver ( version 2.0.12 and below ) is a program
that delivers mail once it has arrived at a given
system.
In the function copy_message(), there is a stack
overwrite that can allow local users execute arbitrary
code as root.
From copymsg.c:
int
copy_message()
{
char buf[BUFSIZ];
:
:
b = (fgets(buf, GETSIZE(buf), stdin) ? TRUE : FALSE);
:
from_line = copystr(buf);
:
:
(void) strcpy(from_line, buf);
(void) strcpy(buf, "Invalid-UUCP-From: ");
(void) strcat(buf, from_line);
If, in the above, buf contains size BUFSIZ amount
of data, we can overwrite 19 bytes ( the size of
"Invalid-UUCP-From: " ) past buf. Unfortunately, that
is enough to overwrite the return stack frame.
Compromise: Users with an account on the machine can gain
root access. Under certain situations this might
be exploitable remotely.
Patch/Fix:

- ----------------
Please find the appropriate packages at these places:
For the stable release
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/bo-updates/deliver_2.1.13-0_i386.deb

left out then.
Until the file has been merged it can be grabbed from a mirror of the
incoming directory, e.g. at
ftp://llug.sep.bnl.gov/pub/debian/Incoming/deliver_2.1.13-0_i386.deb
For the unstable release:
ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/hamm/hamm/binary-<arch>/mail/deliver_2.1.13-1_i386.deb
Where <arch> is one of i386, m68k, powerpc, sparc or alpha.
Until the file has been merged it can be grabbed from a mirror of the
incoming directory, e.g. at

Gmemusage for Linux version 0.2 is out on the stands now. Canonical
site is:
http://reality.sgi.com/raju/software.html
The main change is in the screen update code which now uses pixmaps
(thanks, Yenya!) instead of writing into the window directly, which
removes the annoying flicker; now there's no excuse at all to postpone
downloading this wonderful package :-)
There's also a pastel color scheme instead of those boring red, green,
blue bars.
Sundry minor changes -- LSM and Changelog are given somewhere under.

Title: gmemusage
Version: 0.2
Entered-date: January 14, 1998
Description: Gmemusage is a graphical program modelled after the
Silicon Graphics Inc. program of the same
name. Gmemusage displays a window with a stacked
bar. Areas on the bar correspond to individual
processes running on the system and are updated
periodically. Multiple copies of the same program
(actually, programs with the same name) are merged into
one area on the stack. Sizes of areas in the stack
correspond to resident sizes of the processes.

* Misc: Changed version to "0.2 980114". Added 1998 to copyright
year.
* CREDITS : There's a CREDITS file now, so send your patches in
and become famous!
* Makefile: Added definitions for following variables:
BELL_ON_UNKNOWN_KEYPRESS
USE_PASTELS
SAVE_XSERVER_MEMORY
OPTIONS (agglomerate (sp?) of the above
Default optimization flag is now -O2.
* resource.c: Added a new pastel color scheme for the bars in the
stack. Look at the define for USE_PASTELS in Makefile.
* gmemusage.c : Applied patch to use pixmaps for drawing. Now the
flicker when the window updates is gone. Thanks to Yenya (Jan
"Yenya" Kasprzak <kas at fi.muni.cz>) for this one. Save server
memory (and get a slight performance impact) by defining
SAVE_XSERVER_MEMORY in the Makefile.
(main): Allow Bell to be switched off on unknown keypress. Look at
the define for BELL_ON_UNKNOWN_KEYPRESS in the Makefile.
